i apologise for the absence, woundedkite.com friends. my computer decided to take a christmas vacation to the repair shop, and even though i have a wordpress app on my phone, i just couldn't bring myself to type an entry on those little keys.
in the mean time i have moved into a nice room in a sharehouse just to the east of the city centre, and more importantly started working again. over the course of a week i handed out several copies of my cv at pubs and bars i thought i might like to work at. that weekend, the one before christmas was going to be one of the biggest of the year and i was worried that if i wasn't working by then, i wouldn't be until after the new year. it got to friday and i hadn't heard from any of the nice pubs i had applied at, so i decided to take my housemate's suggestion and try one of the clubs in town. she gave me a name and the location of a club that one of the previous tenants in my room, another aussie girl, had found it quite easy to get a job at.
so off i went in search of this club. i didn't find it, but i found another one that looked quite big. only problem was that it was all closed up, except for a sign on the door saying office hours were 9 to 5 monday to friday, so surely that meant someone would be there. i don't know why, but i had a feeling about this place so i looked up their number and gave them a call. as it happened they were having interviews that evening and invited me to come along. not two hours after that call i had myself a job, which i started that night.
when i got home and told my housemate, we worked out that i had found the place she recommended, they had just changed their name a while back, but all the locals still refer to it by the old name. which isn't confusing at all.
so now i work at a club. it's pretty much the opposite of any place i would ever go, music i would listen to, or crowd i would hang out with, but it has made for interesting social commentary. the one thing i am having problems with is the late finishes. at my bar in cardiff, the very latest we were out of there by was 2am. here's it's more like 6am. my sleeping patterns are completely fucked up.
edinburgh is a wonderful town. it's breathtakingly gorgeous, especially with the recent snow we've had. but cardiff is still my home. even though i have established myself here now, i have an address and employment, i still feel like i'm just visiting. weird.
i was fine on christmas. i called my nan, had a bizarre conversation with my mum on skype where i typed and she talked, and had a fairly gourmet christmas dinner before heading to work. but now i am crushed with homesickness. not even for my friends and family, because we have regular contact, but for my city. this is the best time of year to be a sydneysider. it's hot, but it's not that humid horrible oppression that you get in february. everyone is relaxed and happy after christmas. and new years eve and january sees sydney put it's very best on display. i'm sad that i'm going to miss seeing firsthand what's decorating the bridge for nye, that i'm not going to go to any sydney festival events, that i won't be at an australia day bbq. i've never been one for hot weather, but i even miss that. i miss going to work in the morning and not even needing a jacket. i even miss the hot, still air that greets you as you get on the train at town hall, and only goes away once you're back around the circle at central.
but i keep reminding myself that i will be back soon enough, and i'll be back to see some of the best shows of the year, pavement and the pixies, and i'll be back for the start of the football season. and i still have enough time here for more adventures. i'm thinking about a six day tour of ireland, and then hopping a plane to ljubljana, then working my way up to vienna, then down the danube to budapest. but yeah, just between you and me wk, i am ready to go home.
part two of holiday road coming soon!
