you see, my hair is really, really thick. to combat this and to ensure it doesn't take 15 hours for it to dry each morning, i get it layered. but layering means that it isn't heavy enough to fall straight, and instead it gets a few waves and generally looks HORRIBLE. even blow drying won't get all the waves out. i need to straighten it for it to be truly straight.
however, because i am incredibly lazy, there's probably only 1 day a week where i can be bothered drying my hair, and i only straighten it on really special occasions. so most of the time it looks like ass and i just put it back in a pony tail.
last night i was thinking about what i could do to make the waves go away, while still being as lazy as possible. then i had the brilliant idea to work with the waves and not against them. so i'm considering the perm. but i still have some reservations. i had a perm in 1994, and people referred to my hair as 2 minute noodles.
needless to say, i want to look more like this:

and less like this:

is this even possible? or would it be just as much work to maintain as being a straighty? what i would ultimately like is jump out of the shower, a few scrunches of the hair with some product and away i go. also will it react with my coloured hair? hmm, i guess these are questions for my hair dresser and not the internets. but do you think i should do it?

Mel, you know I fully endorse curly hair! what you said you would ultimately like is pretty much my routine. Mine just grows out of my head like that, but I wonder if a perm would work the same? If you go with one, definitely ask for a loose perm because my mum got the same 2 minute noodle thing when she got hers done once.
Another option is to ask your hairdresser for a cut that will work with your hair without straightening it. I'm sure they can give you some good, wave-friendly layers - my sister did this and I think her hair looks better than when she straightens it! Then we can play around with it (I have some good products for heavy, curly hair!), you might find you can bring out some really pretty natural waves! My curls used to be really uncontrollable and I used to pull them back into a ponytail every day before I figured out how to tame them.
miss mel!! go to a good asian hairdresser!! they do a soft perms, and have all different sizes to suit whatever look you please!!! and they are better for your hair since you dye it.....
what about a straight perm?
